Tree Roots in Your Sewer Line

If you own an older Portland home with mature trees, root intrusion is the sewer problem most likely to find you. Here is how it works and what your real options are.

How roots get in

Old clay and cast iron sewer laterals develop hairline cracks and loosen at the joints over decades. Roots sense the moisture and nutrients inside and grow toward them, slipping through the smallest gap.

Once inside, they fan out into a mesh that catches everything, and the line backs up.

The warning signs

Watch for drains across the house slowing at once, gurgling toilets, sewage smells in the yard, and backups that return a few months after each snaking.

A patch of unusually green, fast-growing grass over the sewer path is another classic clue.

Your options

Cabling or hydro-jetting clears the roots and restores flow, which buys time but does not fix the cracks that let them in. A camera inspection shows how bad the line really is.

For a line that keeps failing, a trenchless replacement or lining renews the pipe with minimal digging, ending the cycle for good.
